About Steven Soderbergh
Director, screenwriter. (b. Jan.14, 1963, Atlanta.) Talented filmmaker who burst onto the scene with his first feature, sex, lies and videotape (1989), a much-talked-about examination of modern morals and sexual attitudes that earned him the Palme d'Or at Cannes and an Original Screenplay Oscar nomination. Before this, Soderbergh had worked at a video production house and gained attention for a Grammy-nominated concert film he directed for the rock group Yes. Following the extraordinary critical success of EB> (a tough, if not impossible, act to follow), Soderbergh directed Kafka (1991), an intriguing blend of different thematic elements from Kafka's stories that received mixed notices. He then adapted and directed King of the Hill (1993), a brilliantly evocative film based on A.E. Hotchner's memoir about growing up in the Depression, and directed but did not write The Underneath (1995), a stylish, low-key film noir based on the 1949 movie Criss Cross.
