About Hsiao-hsien Hou
Born in Mainland China and moved to Taiwan in 1948. Hou entered the National Taiwan Academy of Arts to study film_making and graduated in 1972. He made his debut feature film with Cute Girls in 1980. By his third film Green Green Green of Home (1981), he had helped to define a whole new cinema consciousness in taiwan. In 1989, his City of Sadness won the coveted Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Flowers of Shanghai is his 13th feature film.

A leading figure of the Taiwan New Wave in the last decade, Hou Hsiao Hsien was born in Mainland China and moved to Taiwan in 1948. He graduated from the National Film Academy in 1972. He made his directorial debut with Cute Girls in 1980 and captured international attention with The Boys from Fengkuei(1983) and A Summer at Grandpa ' s(1984). He then continued to make critically acclaimed films including The Time to Live and the Time to Die(1985) and Dust in the Wind(1986). In 1989, his City of Sadnesss won the coveted Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival. Other films include Daughter of the Nile(1987), The Puppetmaster(1993), Good Men, Good Women(1995), and Flowers of Shanghai(1998).
