Dong-sik teaches music to factory workers while his wife spends all day at home laboring at the sewing machine in her efforts to cover the family¡¯s bills and pay for a new two-story house. One day, she breaks down with overwork. Dong-sik asks his student fromthe factory Kyeong-heui to help him find a housemaid. The maid they engage does strange things like catch rats with her bare hands and peep into Dong-sik's room while he gives Kyeong-heui private lessons. One day, while the wife and children are their grandmother¡¯s home, Kyeong-heui calls on Dong-sik and confesses her love. Don-sik refuses it and Kyeong-heui threatens him. After Kyeong-heui leaves, the housemaid approaches Dong-sik who is in anguish. Unable to control his impulses, he forces himself on her. The housemaid becomes jealous of his wife and clings to Dong-sik. She discovers she is pregnant and threatens to tell his wife. Dong-sik finally confesses all to his wife, who forces the housemaid to have an abortion. The housemaid¡¯s jealousy of the wife¡¯s baby and resentment about the loss of her own fill her with thoughts of revenge, spurred on by the wife¡¯s desire to throw her out. She causes the death of Dong-sik¡¯s son and plans the downfall of the whole family. In the end, she forces Dong-sik to commit suicide with her.
